Di Findley, Executive Director of Iowa CareGivers had a great op-ed piece in the Des Moines Register yesterday. Des Moines Register "Iowa View" of 10/3/2015 She is so right on: we are already experiencing a shortage in professional caregivers, which we desperately need to supplement all the family caregivers carrying the burden in this country. Twenty-nine percent of America adults are caring for another person.
And this provider crisis is not a short-term issue. The number of Americans age 65 and older will increase by 70 percent in the next 15 years and double by 2050. Meanwhile, over one million nurses will retire in the next 10-15 years. This is deja vu all over again as the aging Boomers knock on the door of the health care system and--once again--hear "Where did all these people come from?"
